Greening Your Community

Earth Day is about coming together to each do our part for the environment. Whether you choose to be extra conscious of your energy and water consumption, educate others about a certain environmental concern, or take political action by writing your local representatives, each small action counts and can certainly create a ripple effect for those around you. While we should consider taking action and doing our part for the environment everyday, Earth Day provides us with the special opportunity to come together with our respective communities to celebrate our Earth and engage in dialogue about what action needs to be done. This year in my community, several organizations and small business are coming together to organize an Earth Day Walk-About where community members can embark on a guided walking tour of all the different “green” businesses and “green” initiatives that are taking place right in our own backyard. The objectives of the Earth Day Walk-About are to provide an opportunity for community members to become familiar with where they can shop, what products to buy, and potentially get ideas on what they can do to start greening their own workplaces. It is an opportunity for businesses and organizations to network with each other and share ideas about different “green” initiatives they have taken, how these have worked and discuss some of the benefits and challenges they have encountered while implementing different strategies. Certainly, we have a long way to go for business and organizations to become completely carbon neutral, but this is a fabulous way of celebrating the fact that we are on our way and we are open to new and innovative ideas. This is also a great educational opportunity for community members to become informed consumers and participate in creating an economically and environmentally sustainable community.
