Unless you live in an area affected by drought, many of us take water for granted. However, during storm seasons many people can be caught off guard when water systems are overtaken by flooding or even in winter if a water main breaks. What do you do if you find yourself without drinking water?Be PreparedAs the Boy Scout credo tells us, preparation is the key. Be sure to keep one or two cases of bottled water on hand in case of an emergency. If you find yourself running low on water and you have no water pressure, remember that if you have a water heater in your home, you have a supply of clean drinking water. All water heaters have a spigot and you can drain them easily. Portable Water FilterSomething else you might want to keep in hand in case of an emergency is a portable water filter. The Sawyer system seen here can filter 4 liters of water in 3 minutes and removes bacteria down to .1 micron including giardia, salmonella and cryptosporidia. I have a rain barrel system that holds 80 gallons of water, which if an emergency situation arose, I could tap it by using the water filter to remove bacteria, and even boil it as a second line of defense.Canned GoodsKeep certain canned goods handy as a final backup. Certain canned fruits and veggies like tomatoes, pineapple, and peaches have a lot of water in them. Eating these foods can replace up to 20% of your daily needs. Any other thoughts out there?
You should ideally drain the WH tank every few months in you expect to use it as potable water, even though the inlet tube is angled at the bottom to stir the water around a lot of dirt and such still gathers at the bottom and comes out the drain. Drain it at the start of hurricane season or once a year or every 6 months to get some of the dirt out.
